Un terremoto destructivo de magnitud 8,8 ha sacudido la costa noreste de Japón y ha provocado un tsunami con olas de hasta diez metros que ha alcanzado la ciudad de Sendai, donde el agua ha arrasado todo a su paso, incluyendo casas, coches, barcos y granjas y ha llegado a los edificios.

Según la policía local de las zonas costeras próximas a la localidad de Sendai, se han encontrado al menos 351 cuerpos sepultados bajo el agua del tsunami. Pero fuentes policiales hablan ya de más de 1.000 víctimas entre fallecidos y desaparecidos.
